Medical Movies to Love

Below are just a few movies I recommend for all health professionals, whether you are a doctor, nurse, tech, pharmacist, or on the business side:

If you know me, I love movies, but there is not always time in my schedule. I like most genres and I especially love health documentaries and movies about the medical world . How does our culture affect our lifestyles? Below are just a few top rated movies I recommend for all health professionals. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if you are a pre-med, doctor, nurse, tech, pharmacist, or on the business side:

Gifted Hands

This popular, made for TV movie is based upon the life of world renowned neurosurgeon Ben Carson and his upbringing in Detroit. Perfect film for pre-meds who want to know more about medicine. Unless you have lived under a rock for the past 5 years, you know what Dr. Ben Carson is up to now. Also, his book has inspired millions, whether you agree with his politics or not.

The Impossible

The tsunamis that wrecked and ruined South Asia during Christmas time of 2004 left more in the aftermath than water. This movie is a look into the work health professionals play during massive trauma situations. There is also a look into foreign health care systems and aid procedures. I personally rank it as a top unexpected movie for all of those who love medicine.

Contagion movie (2011)

I love Contagion, especial as a medicine film for all audiences. It is easily one of my top 20 movies of all time. I used to watch this all throughout medical school, especially during my Immunology blocks. It reminds me why biology, public health, and response teams are so important. As a medical movie, it has all of the top topics. It is even critically acclaimed.

Patch Adams

A forgotten comedy film that is unique for its playful mastery of physician based comedy and life lessons. I recommend this for families, children, or just to have a few laughs during girl night. Also check out this medical blog & foundation with the same name.

Flatliners (2017)

This is a remake of an older version made in 1990. It is about med school students navigating real issues that students struggle with. It is a low drama medicine movie that’s easy to watch when studying or just board with some free time. No spoilers here!

I know you all are the real experts. What is your favorite medical movie? Have your favorites changed as you learned more about the medical world & progressed through your training? Comment below!
